Vardioles
“Vardioles” are stone-built monumental watchtowers constructed by the Venetians in order to warn them of the arrival of enemy or pirate ships.
In case of danger, the guards would light a fire, visible for miles and as far as the next “vardiola,” whose guards would in turn light their own fire and thus spread the news throughout the island within a matter of a few minutes.
