The Lady of the Angels

Constructed in 1687 in Spanish Plateresque style and dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Kyria ton Aggelon (Lady of the Angels) church, which is located on Karrer Street, behind Aghios Marcos square in the city center, is one of the island’s very few architectural monuments that were faithfully restored to their original state after collapsing in a devastating earthquake that struck the area in 1953.

It is worth visiting this church to view its stone reliefs adorning the interior walling, the ornate wooden shrine and icons by Nikolaos Doxaras, a key exponent of the renowned Ionian School, representing the beginning of modern Greek painting.
