The Achilleion

Built in 1890 on the commission of Empress Elisabeth of Austria – more popularly known as Sisi, her life inspired the 1955 film Sissi starring Romy Schneider – this sumptuous summer palace that now functions as a museum was the empress’ tribute to the mythical hero Achilles.

Sisi’s passion for Greek history and culture are evident in every detail of the classically inspired décor and artworks, such as “The Triumph of Achilles” by Austrian painter Franz von Matsch and the many marble statues by German sculptor Ernst Herter.
