Pontikonisi

The pocket-sized island of Pontikonisi.

From the the tip of the Kanoni peninsula, it’s hard not to be intrigued by the sight of Pontikonisi (Mouse Island), an oblong rock loaded with thick greenery and tall trees; legend has it that the boat of Odysseus was turned into this island by Poseidon. Concealed among the trees is the sparkling white 11th–12th-century Byzantine church of Pantokrator, which, when viewed from afar, is said to look like a mouse, its tail being the winding steps leading up to it. One can visit via caique from Kanoni or Vlacherna Monastery, but stopovers are kept short, except on August 6th when pilgrims flood to the church to honor the feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus.
