Museum of Asian Art
Once the Palace of St Michael and St George (Palaia Anaktora) situated on the north side of the Spianada square in the Campiello district, the Museum of Asian Art, which pays tribute to far eastern and Indian art, is one of a kind nationwide. The museum was founded in 1928 as the Sino-Japanese Art Museum, but its wide-ranging collection grew and evolved to include around 15,000 works, mainly gathered from the collections of private donors. In 1973, the museum’s collection was enriched with 400 works from India, Pakistan, Siam and Tibet, leading to a change, not only of its name as the Museum of Asian Art, but of its overall identity as well.
