Lush vegetation and dense foliage blocks out the sunlight; the only sounds you hear are those of running water and chirping birds. Melissa Gorge, in the area of Sfakiata, is so tranquil and so beautiful you feel you are the first to discover it. But people have been harnessing the power of its rushing streams long before the footpaths were paved and fenced for visitors.

In the 19^th century more than 50 watermills were in operation. Today, on the two wonderful, well-marked routes, which take 20 and 30 minutes respectively, you will encounter natural springs, stone bridges and some of these old watermills.
