The Old Town of Corfu, known as the Campiello, is an absolute delight to explore. It’s no wonder that UNESCO has designated is as a protected heritage site for its unique, authentic attributes: mainly Venetian-influenced architectural magnificence (the Venetians ruled here for over 400 years, never yielding to the Ottomans); quaint labyrinthine streets and tall buildings that kept residents in close quarters; the Old and New Fortresses; the huge and resplendent Spianada, Greece’s largest square, and the Liston piazza-promenade bordering it; the Palace of St Michael and St George; over 40 historical Orthodox churches; the beautiful Archaeological and Byzantine museums and endless, beatific gems tucked away in its many deeply historical corners. Add to that some wonderful places to sit and watch the world go by, and you might never leave.
